In these two essays, Richard Sennett reflects upon the condition of foreignness, of being strange, different, and the way in which this condition is conceived of by the locals and experienced by the outsider, something which depends on a historical and social context. The author bases his reflection on two specific geographical locations: the Jewish ghetto in Renaissance Venice, in which he studies the consequences of segregation--especially the two social classes inhabited by the Jews and the prostitutes-- and Europe at the beginning of the XIXth century, where a new concept of nationhood was born.
